Will Roku delete your channel?
Roku has started to cancel the visual screen components from all channels and will intensify these efforts in the upcoming months. Here is what you can do with it.
What is going on exactly?
Roku has recently announced its plans to completely remove the legacy components. This means that all channels have to start using Roku SceneGraph (RSG) for their UI by January 1, 2019.
After this date, the old legacy components will be removed from the firmware and channels with these components will no longer work. However, the change will affect a majority of channels earlier than that.
Timeline of changes
- July 1, 2017: All new channels must use RSG or Direct Publisher
- January 1, 2018: All channel updates must use RSG or Direct Publisher
- January 1, 2019: Legacy visual screen components will be removed completely from Roku OS
What can I do with that?
For most of the publishers, these changes will mean more or less development work to make the transition of their channels from the legacy visual screens to RSG. In order to make this transition as smooth as possible, you basically have 3 different options depending on several aspects of your channel.
1. Use the Roku Direct Publisher
Roku Direct Publisher is kept up-to-date with the latest updates of Roku OS and offers probably the fastest way for updating your channel, but this option will work properly only for specific channels.
So if your answers on both of following questions are "YES", this option is most certainly for you:
- Did you launch your channel using the Roku Direct Publisher?
- Do you want to have a channel with the most basic UI and no premium features?
2. Follow the SDK1 to SceneGraph guide
Roku has prepared the migration guide to SceneGraph for those, who have built their channel using the old legacy SDK and followed Roku's "VideoPlayer" template channel. The guide mirrors the VideoPlayer template's UI and functionality and allows you to convert your channel.
3. Get your channel redesigned by professionals
SceneGraph components are definitely a step forward and offer many opportunities for a sleek custom design. We believe that by redesigning your Roku channel's UI you can drive the maximum engagement and differentiate significantly from your competitors.
With our experienced BrightScript team working on a dozen of big Roku projects, we have implemented the latest development patterns introduced in the Roku SDK 2.0 including the SceneGraph components. This allows us to make not only beautiful but functional design.
